Don't Waste Your Focus on Things You Can't Control

Posted in Employers on Mar 22, 2017 by Richard Hayden

As we continue our theme on business growth, we thought it would be good to write a blog about the economy and our thoughts around it.

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

The news of Brexit is in the news every day and most of the stories are about how bad this is going to be for us when we leave the single market. The fact is many businesses will prosper and many may need to make changes. However, isn’t change what business is all about? We must move with the times and change our products, services and processes accordingly.

Mindset

With the amount of doom and gloom news there is out there, it can be easy to get caught up in it and before you know it, our mindset has changed to a negative one and you decide to be cautious or put the brakes on and there goes your growth plans for 2017!

Reality

Obviously, someone, somewhere is benefiting from predicting this “doom and gloom” as a likely reality. Something very important to understand, however, is that the only “reality” occurring is the one you’re creating for yourself. Reality is not some fixed thing and certainly not something created by the evening news. The “reality” you experience has little to do with outside circumstances and everything to do with you. This explains why, no matter what is happening in society, there are always people who seem immune to it. These are the people who thrive regardless of economic conditions.

Conditions

Like a golfer can’t control how fast the greens are or how his opponent plays, a business owner can’t control the stock market, the competition’s business model or even Brexit. Focusing on the conditions is counterproductive. There are plenty of things we can complain about, but it's a waste of emotional energy to focus on things we cannot control. The ultimate test for a business owner is to focus on the things you can control.

Attitude, Process and Effort

Attitude, Process and Effort...these are the only three things we have complete control over. It’s not about what’s happening around us or what’s happening to us, it’s about what’s happening inside us. Our biggest challenge is not the conditions or the competition, it’s ourselves. When you integrate this idea into your consciousness you become immune to outside conditions and you begin to create your own circumstances. You essentially create your own economy.

Good luck growing your business in 2017 and beyond.
