Survival of the Office Party

Posted in Candidates, Employers on Dec 01, 2011 by Richard Hayden

Alas the Festive season is upon us and too the fabled Office Christmas Party. We know that the annual christmas party is a potential minefield, so we have compiled our Top Tips to ensure that you do not fall foul of Christmas Party etiquette.

Attendance - Whilst the invitation may be made in an informal manner be aware that your attendance is not optional. You may detest the whole concept of spending an evening with your work colleagues but this is your employer / boss showing their gratitude for your hard work and input. Furthermore not attending can intimate an unwillingness to be a part of the team.

Dress Code – Would you let your mother see you dressed like that? If the answer is no, put it down and choose something else to wear. Dressing inappropriately at the office Christmas party will haunt you and others, for years to come. Ladies refrain from overly provocative items such as low-plunging necklines, mini-skirts or tight-fitting trousers. Gentlemen whilst you may have worked all year to create those muscles your colleagues and boss do not need to see them in all their glory. Refrain from tight-fitting shirts or trousers and do not undo more than two buttons.

Conversation - Take the opportunity to talk to everyone, this is a great chance to catch up with those people you don’t often see, or just to put a face to a name. It can help to forge long term alliances which may just come in handy when you least expect it. Avoid overly personal topics of conversation, no-one needs to know when, why and how your last relationship ended.

Drink in moderation – Indulging in a few too many at the Christmas party will not only win you any favours. Start the evening as you mean to go on, it is a marathon not a race. It is likely that at some point the Absinthe or Tequila will make an appearance. Remember excessive drinking will not only give you a pounding headache the next day but is likely to lower your inhibitions to a point of no return. Remember that girl last year who was trying to dance like Madonna or that guy and his Bon Jovi impression or better yet that person you spotted throwing up whilst waiting for a taxi. You don’t want to be them.

When all is said and done, have fun and enjoy the festivities.  This is your Christmas party, just don’t leave all of your senses at the door.
